Welcome to Tempered Calamity! For as long as horses can remember, this place has been their santucary far removed from the presence of any humans. Well protected and abundant in food and space, equines of all kinds have called these lands home. Over time, the original horses who settled here spread out to explore and established the territory boundaries known today.
On the surface things appear peaceful between the different bands as well as the free roaming horses, but all is not as it seems. The inhabitants here are under constant threat. Not only do they have to survive the elements and natural disasters and outwit predators, they must also face rival herds or individuals looking to steal land or other horses.
Tempered Calamity is a semi-realistic wild horse rpg inspired by old school play by post forums. Low word count and minimal activity requirements, come check us out or say hey on our discord!

The buckskin stallion cowed before her at the retort, flinching back from the venom in her words. She almost rolled her eyes at the act, finding it suspicious. The way he had spoken to her, as though she already belonged to him, was not the tone of one who would cower so easily. A suspicious proven correct as just as soon as the thought had left her mind he had dropped the act and approached her in a charge.
Butting his chest agianst hers and pinning her gaze with a glare. Oh yes, this stallion was certainly exactly everything she had surmised he would be. Arrogant and a brute. Further cementing himself as such with his next words. Whatever he wanted her to be? How absurd. Perhaps if she was a lesser mare or creature. Easily subdued or intimidated. But if he wanted her to be the coward, the submissive lesser being, she could play her part.
With how vicious this stallion's tongue was she was sure that the interaction would end in violence if she chose any other response. How she loathed him in that moment. A hundred retorts bubbled to the surface of her thoughts and she had to quietly bite her tongue to hold them back. Who did he think he was to claim her? She did not belong to him, or to anyone other than herself. He would come to regret his choice, she told herself.
Struggling to maintain a neutral tone and not the biting anger that threatened to burst from her throat, she carefully stepped back from him. "Emrys," she tried the name on her tongue. It was short, a single syllable but the word tasted dirty in her mouth. Feigning a smile, or her best attempt at one, she moved in a circle around him as though she were admiring the shine of his coat. "Reverence? Why are you one who deserves my reverence?" she asked, tone one of innocent inquiry.

[attr="class", pbody] Today was much like any other, though typically Praxagora preferred not to visit this particular area. The bandits herds who roamed the area were reason enough but she supposed so were any strangers. She was the type of horse who preferred her own company, particularly after the disaster that had been Typhoid. Even now she held regrets for the way things had gone between them. However she had to move on. Nothing she did would change the past and she had to admit to herself that the young filly she had found and adopted had been set on a dangerous path from the beginning. Her hopes of possibly diverting that path had ultimately been in vain.
Sighing, the cream coloured mare picked her way across the rocky terrain, broken only by the sparse vegetation that covered the ground. It was some of this particularly greenery that she had come here for. Some of her herbal remedies required the unique and rare plants that only seemed to grow here on the ridge.
As she approached the edge that peered into the abyss below, her eyes settled on a small figure that stood on the edge. Very quickly it was apparent that the figure was a foal, very young judging by their small stature. Her heart siezed uncomfortably at the sight, the memory of finding Typhoid in much the same state overwhelming her thoughts. Was she cursed to come across every young or orphaned foal in all the territories? The universe forever meaning to torture her?
Briefly she contemplated just turning and walking away before the foal saw her but she couldn't do that. Never able to turn her back on another who might be in need. Even if it was only temporarily. Steeling herself against the thoughts that came unbidden, she approached the foal. "Hello little one," she said in greeting. Her voice was soft and drifted across the breeze in a sweet melody. Whether or not the foal reacted and ran she didn't know but she would do her best to try and reassure them if they wanted.
[attr="class","calamity-post-body"] If Calypso had felt any aggression or wariness of the young filly, it quickly disolved at the sound of the soft tones coming from the small mouth. It was silly to assume she was a potential threat. Perhaps she still could be and Calypso was never one to fully let down her guard. However it made little sense to react with agression. At least not until the filly provoked her. Could it still happen? Of course but Calypso reminded herself to wait and see what happened first. Her usual approach of act first think second was probably ill-advised.
Shifting her weight slightly, leaning back onto her hindquarters and relaxing into the stance she chewed in thought. Hornet was the name and it almost made her laugh. What an odd name for a filly so soft in her speech. She almost blurted out a follow up question before quickly holding her tongue as the young stranger continued. Certainly most of the horses who traversed this area would be at or near the water's edge.
The question she had so quickly stamped out floated back to the surface. Why was she out here all alone? The free lands weren't exactly safe, even for an adult such as herself. Resisting the urge to bombard Hornet with such questions though, she focused again on the words falling from her small lips. Oops. She knew the hurried pace in which she had spoken was probably jarring. Dipping her head slightly in a silent apology, the chestnut mare smiled. "I'm sorry," she said, deliberately slowing her words, "I am used to the way of my old bandmates. They were all a bit hotheaded and spoke quickly."
Lost in thought for a moment as the memories flooded her mind, she physically shook them from her head. Her long mane was flicked back from her eyes as she did so. "Old herd? What happened to them?" she queried.

[attr="class","tcpost2-body"]
Unperturbed by the stallion's unwavering gaze, she matched his with a stare of her own. Her useless eye didn't blink as she took in his form now that he was standing in front of her. Black lips turned into a matching smirk and that told her everything she thought she needed to know about him. Arrogant or confident it didn't matter to her. He was a stallion and was probably like all the others who thought the world belonged to them. She was well practised in dealing with those who harbored that particular opinion.
His eyes were sharp and calculating and she wondered what thoughts were dancing through his mind as he took her in. Likely similar to her own she surmised. Two strangers who recognised the cunning in the other and were sizing each other up. If she was the type to care she might have thought he was somewhat handsome. His coat was well maintained and his form built instead of scrawny. The opposite of the last stallion she had crossed paths with at The Scourge. That sad creature had hardly been worth the breath she wasted speaking to him. No matter now. Typhoid had been quick to correct him. When words had fallen on deaf ears she had used force and the stranger had been quick to concede. She would never belong to anyone again and any who attempted she wouldn't hesitate to put them in their place. She could not be won. And if she did allow it? It was to meet her own ends, nothing more.
This stranger though was different. Clearly a new opponent she would have to tread carefully. She could hold her own in a fight but wasn't a fool. He could easily overpower her if he really wanted to she was sure. At his greeting her eyes narrowed if only slightly. Crimson ears flicked backward, showing her displeasure at the moniker. "I'm not your love," she bit out. Then forcing herself to return to neutral, ears turning back toward him and her tone softening, she replied.
"You may call me Typhoid for that is my name. And yours?"
[attr="class","calamity-post-body"] Something about the way the other stallion seemed entirely flipant about his own insult excited the dark hued stallion. Centurion felt his blood surge, a chill spreading across his skin at the thrill of it. He knew the game well, having played it many times before. A dance of thinly veiled insults and malice wrapped in a polite façade. Was he truly being offered the choice? The power to decide the outcome of this interaction? Hell no. He was certain that the buckskin stallion was as aware as he was. They were enemies from the minute they crossed paths.
"Undecided then? No matter. You'll have time yet to make up your mind."
A sudden change in the wind that blew through the crevice gave him a heightened taste of the vaguely familiar scent radiating off of the stallion he had noticed when the other male had first approached. In a moment of clarity he recalled why it seemed familiar. He had passed through The Valley, or along its edges, on his way here. This stallion must reside there. Strange though as he couldn't remember seeing any bands of horses in the neighbouring territory since he had claimed The Overlook.
If they were now neighbours though he foresaw many scuffles. This stallion was not one he wanted as an ally. Not to mention the stallion's mere presence there would upset all his plans of expanding his own domain. Snorting, Centurion stepped fowrard ever so slightly. The cramped tight spacing at the bottom of the crevice made a fight impossible. There was barely room to even turn around let alone engage in an all out fight. He would need to speak carefully so as not to provoke this stranger.
"What brings you here at this time of night? Seeking allies or are your purposes more nefarious?"
[attr="class","calamity-post-note"] sequoia notes;; I'm SO sorry this took so long but yeesss
[attr="class","calamity-post-body"] Noticing the mare's slight stumble, the stallion made a mental note to ensure that the mare was returned to full health and vitality once they returned to his herd land. While she wasn't thin he couldn't be sure if she wasn't nursing some small injury somewhere. Sure it was hard to starve out here, the grass plentiful in the unclaimed territories, but that wasn't to say it wasn't unheard of. That wasn't to mention how dangerous the lands could be for a lone horse, particularly a mare.
His attention turned again to her mouth as she spoke and he couldn't stop the grin that spread across his own lips in response. "I'm glad you think so," he said.
Truly he was. When he had first decided to settle down and claim The Overlook for himself he had wondered what he was going to do with it. Did he want to simply live there alone? Or did he want to try and build a herd? A tightly knit group of horses that he could command as his own. Granted he hadn't yet decided if he wanted to use them for his own means...namely trying to conquer any neighbouring lands or if he was content with the territory he had.
Pursing his lips he pushed the thoughts into the recesses of his mind. They were questions for him to deal with later. Now he needed to focus on the mare in front of him. Her eyes captured his as she flicked the locks from her forehead and he tested the feeling of a gentle smile on his lips. "The honour is mine," he said. Centurion braced against her and returned her shoulder bump with one of his own. "The view from the top of the kingdom is breathtaking. Particularly at sunrise. I would be happy to show you."

[attr="class","calamity-post-body"] Underneath the mare's disheveled appearance, he could see that she held a certain fine quality that he hadn't expected or noticed at first. She would make for an excellent first herd mate, though whether his intentions for her role were great or small he didn't yet know. He could see her leading armies by his side but first he knew he had to win her loyalty. Unfortunately the only true way of doing that was to open himself up, if only a little. What he shared didn't have to be completely truthful he told himself. Not yet. He wasn't ready to expose that much of himself.
A perfectly crafted chuckle escaped his lips, a break from the frown that she had teased him about. If she thought him only capable of frowning, if only in jest, he would prove her wrong. "You don't know the half of it," he returned, his bemused tone a lilting melody. Amber eyes flicked in her direction to catch her reaction but he was unprepared for her to direct the conversation to a more somber tone. He found himself nodding along, being able to relate to the words that spilled from her lips. At least the part about growing up faster and younger than he had wanted to.
Most would probably disagree with his sentiment on that particular matter. He had been spoiled and pampered for far longer than the rest of the colts and fillies his age had been. While they had undergone the rituals and rites of passage to indicate the transition from young to adult, Centurion himself had skirted the responsibilities for as long as he pleased. However when that time had ended, it ended so abruptly and violently...well he was still bitter about it needless to say. One minute he had been the beloved prince and the next he had been an outcast who had to fend for himself. The stallion who had found and taken him in had not been gentle nor kind in his teachings either. It was kill or be killed.
Shaking his head he focused again on the present. It sounded like she too had secrets but he didn't really care what her history said. He liked what she was now and anything else was in the past. Same as it was for his own background. He whinnied in response to her teasing and tossed his head in a nod, the motion flicking his mane and forelock back into the wind. "Would you have said no if I was?" he teased back before replying in earnest. "I would enjoy your company. Come it's not far," he said and moved westward toward The Overlook.
