Welcome to Tempered Calamity! For as long as horses can remember, this place has been their santucary far removed from the presence of any humans. Well protected and abundant in food and space, equines of all kinds have called these lands home. Over time, the original horses who settled here spread out to explore and established the territory boundaries known today.
On the surface things appear peaceful between the different bands as well as the free roaming horses, but all is not as it seems. The inhabitants here are under constant threat. Not only do they have to survive the elements and natural disasters and outwit predators, they must also face rival herds or individuals looking to steal land or other horses.
Tempered Calamity is a semi-realistic wild horse rpg inspired by old school play by post forums. Low word count and minimal activity requirements, come check us out or say hey on our discord!

The lands are brimming with new life. From various flora and fauna to the horses who live here, everyone is waking up from Winter. Warmer temperatures and longer days mean more time to spend grazing and spending time with loved ones. Courting rituals are beginning and colts and fillies alike are completing their rites of passage to earn adult status in their herds and join the others in finding a partner or position in society.
[break][break]
Melting snow on The Summit makes for loose footing at dangerous heights. Mountain horses should take care to watch their step when navigating the peaks. The Lake as well is swollen and potentially dangerous to inexperienced swimmers.
[break][break]
Both The Waterfall as well as The River are overflowing beyond their regular banks, the water moving swift and ruthless. Residents of The Midlands should take extra precaution when roaming these areas so they aren't swept away or drown.
[break][break]
Relatively uneffected by the increase in water levels, The Southlands are enjoying a mild Spring. In The Desert temperatures are still dangerously cold at night so horses should be careful not to be caught out alone. On the other hand, The Swamp is quickly heating up. Various creatures are waking from hibernation and are hungry. Young horses should be wary of crocodiles lurking in the waters.
[break][break]
Across the strait, the Islands are experiencing tropical storms due to the increasing temperatures. Severe rains and harsh winds are likely at any moment making travel across The Crossing extremely dangerous. Those who call The Islands home or reside in The Archipelago should take shelter and avoid the low ground as much as possible due to flooding conditions.
Not sure what breed type your character would fall under? Check below for a list of breeds that fall into each grouping! [break] *Note: This is not a complete list of every existing horse breed. Some sources I found said there are more than 400 recognised breeds worldwide and that's just a few too many to include here. If you don't see the breed you had in mind listed and weren't sure, PM a staff member to ask what type they would fall under!
Height Horses are measured in hands. A hand is equal to 4 inches or 10.16cm. When calculating the height in hands, you only go up in quarter increments. So you can have a horse who might be 15.1, 15.2, or 15.3, but adding the final quarter increment will go up to the next hand: 16, instead of 15.4.
Eyes Horses normally can only have brown, blue, hazel, or green eyes. Most horses will have brown eyes but some genes can influence the colour. Famously, double cream horses such as Cremello, Perlino, or Smokey Cream, all have blue eyes. Here on Tempered Calamity, you are able to have horses with other colours such as gold, amber, etc. which can be purchased from our shop!
Age Horses usually live between 20-30 years, though there are records of horses living up to 50 or even 60 in some very rare cases. In the wild however, horses only live to 15-16 on average. Here on Tempered Calamity horses will live a typical lifespan between 20-30 years old.
Bald Face A wide marking that often covers the eyes and extends down over the nostrils.
Medicine Hat A small area of pigment over the ears and in between the ears on an otherwise white horse.
Badger Face A bald face that has been interrupted with a large patch of pigment giving it a distinct "outline" appearance over the face. Usually over the eyes and over the muzzle.
Inverted Badger Face A large, often blaze shaped patch of pigment over the face on an otherwise white horse or white face.
Apron Face A bald face that extends over the muzzle and chin or lower jaw.
Bloody Shoulder An area of unaffected pigment on a Gray horse, usually occurring on the shoulder or neck.
Reverse Bloody Shoulder An area of depigmentation on a horse, usually occurring on the shoulder or neck.

[attr="class","maintext"] Seasons last for three real life months. However, this will not impact or limit your character's stories. ie Pregnant mares do not have to wait the full year to give birth.

[attr="class","maintext"] While we do use liquid time on the site, please try and keep new threads you start relative to the current season. If you're finishing up an older thread from a previous season, carry on! You don't have to have the season change mid-conversation or anything.

04
[attr="class","maintext"] When each new season starts, Mother Nature will post an update about the status of the land as well as what you can expect of the weather. It will also include a few writing prompts for things your characters might encounter or need to be wary of. ie avalanches in spring or drought in summer etc.

05
[attr="class","maintext"] Each spring, all characters will be automatically aged up by at least one year. It is your responsibility to keep track of your character's ages and update them accordingly. If you would like to age your character up more than one year due to plots or things that happened to them, you're more than welcome to do so!

07
[attr="class","maintext"] While participating in events is not mandatory, it is encouraged! Events are a great opportunity to ineract with the other members as well as a chance to earn some special rewards or bonuses!
[attr="class","maintext"] Here are some various templates to use around the site! Most are some basic posting templates but there's some other fun stuff in here too! If you don't see anything you like right now, check back soon! The staff are updating and adding to this list frequently.
